The Spring Spruce

Allergies are not my friend. I’ve suffered and endured since I was a child. One of my biggest nemesis is the dust mite. Yes, this ugly little basically microscopic insect wreaks havoc on my body, turning me into a sniffling, sneezing, snotty, stuffed up mess. As a result I am always airing out my house and washing my bed linens - winter, summer, spring and fall. I can’t wait till the seasons change. But, as most of us know, spring cleaning is all about freshening up and one place where dust mites run rampant is in our pillows and mattresses. For a place where we spend a lot of time, our beds are filled with so many gross things like dead skin cells, hair, dust mites, animal dander and only God knows what other things are lurking, it's time to clean it and do it the right way.

Here is a really simple mattress and pillow spray that I have concocted which utilizes distilled white vinegar and essential oils to absorb odors and deter dust mites.

So you’re going to have to put a little work into this method of attack, but it is so worth the fight.

  1. Remove all bed linens and wash with a natural laundry detergent.(we have that in the store!)

  2. Open the windows and let in the fresh air.

  3. Spray the mattress with this natural mattress spray and leave to air dry for a few hours if possible.

  4. Vacuum the mattress to remove any lingering unwanted dirt or pests.

HOW TO MAKE MATTRESS AND PILLOW SPRAY

  • 1 Cup distilled water

  • 1 Cup distilled white vinegar

  • Glass Spray Bottle (Amazon has a huge selection, click here for the link).

  • 4 drops of lemon essential oil

  • 4 drops eucalyptus essential oil

  • 8 drops lavender essential oil

  • 8 drops peppermint essential oil

  • 8 drops rosemary essential oil

Add all of the ingredients into the bottle and shake it up!

Before using it, always shake.

That's all, your sinuses will thank you for it.
